Course Overview

This VicRoads approved course is aimed at those who want a Victorian Light Rigid (LR) Synchromesh driver’s licence. This licence allows you to drive buses, trucks and other rigid vehicles that weigh between 4.5 and 8 tonnes GVM, seating more than 12 adults plus the driver. One-on-one courses will be conducted in your own vehicle and take around 6 hours. Candidates have the option of receiving a statement of attainment with a nationally recognised unit of competency from the TLI training package. At the completion of the course, successful trainees will be issued with their Victorian LR licence and, if selected, their statement of attainment.

  • Reversing and manoeuvring
  • Turning and handling
  • Vehicle positioning
  • Gears and their uses
  • City and highway driving
  • Road law
  • System of vehicle control
  • Performing cabin checks
  • Performing pre-drive safety inspections

Course Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to:

  • Conduct pre-operational vehicle inspections and checks
  • Correctly start, steer, position, manoeuvre, and stop the vehicle
  • Correctly manage engine power to minimise gear and engine wear
  • Reverse, maintain visibility, and accurately position the vehicle
  • Correctly park, shut down and secure the vehicle
  • Successfully identify and avoid hazards (defensive driving)
  • Safely load the vehicle and use the most appropriate load restraint method

Course Requirements

Be able to drive a car with a manual transmission

Have a valid Victorian car licence

Have held an Australian car licence for at least one year

Provide primary proof of identification prior to course commencement

Course requires applicant to use their own vehicle

Light Rigid Licence

A Light Rigid vehicle is any bus or truck greater than 4.5 tonnes GVM but equal to or less than 8 tonnes GVM, or seating 13 or more adults (including the driver). To be eligible for a light rigid licence you must have held a car licence for at least one year.
